June’s All-Star of the Month: Rae Action!

Name: Rae Action
Number: 80HG

What’s the story behind your name and number?
By day I am an Environmental Chemistry PhD student so my name is a play on the word “reaction”.. like, chemical reaction.. Get it? OK…  My number is the atomic number and symbol for mercury. It’s my favorite element (not the planet). It’s pretty but dangerous. Also, if you say eighty-H-G really fast it sounds like ADHD.

What positions do you play?
Blocker

What is your favorite thing about derby?
I have two favorite things: The people and the athletic challenge. The derby community is so supportive and wonderful. I love them dearly. The athletic challenge is what keeps me coming to every practice to push myself further than I ever thought I could go.

What first attracted you to the sport?
I desperately wanted to play a team sport but nothing ever peaked my interest until I heard about roller derby. It looked like so much fun and like something I would be interested in learning.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned from playing?
This is a hard question because I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a person playing roller derby and learned SO much. But, I think I’ve learned how to open up to people and trust them more because my teammates are such incredible people. I’ve learned how to be more of a team player.

What are your goals as a player?
Basically, I want to be a great asset to my team while having fun.

What is your most memorable moment on the track?
The first time I jammed in a bout. It was my first bout and I was extremely nervous. I got lead and was able to put quite a few points on the board. I came off the track and was completely overwhelmed (almost to the point of tears) by what I had just accomplished. I had surprised myself. I never imagined I could do anything like that until that moment. That feeling of accomplishment pushes me to continue improving.

What type of gear do you prefer?
I wear a mis-matched set of gear. I really like my Triple-8 knee pads and my Atom Poisons wheels.

Do you have a favorite song to skate to or a theme song?
No.

What is your favorite sign or cheer you’ve seen or heard from the crowd?
Red Stick! Red Stick! Oi! Oi! Oi! (Obviously)

If you could arm wrestle any person in the league, who would you arm wrestle and why?
Probably Val Killmore… She always wins at arm wrestling so if I won, I’d be extremely proud of myself and if I lost… hey! At least I lost to the best.

Is there a teammate with whom you work the best?
I’m not sure if there is a single person I work best with but I really like working with Photobomber because she’s so incredibly encouraging and Little Miss Maggot because I always learn something from her.

What sports did you play before you laced up the quads and took to the flat track?
I used to be on a swim team, I was in TaeKwonDo for a while, and I run. The quads stole my heart though.

What do you do when you’re not skating?
I try to save or blow up the planet in a laboratory (depends on my mood that day) and I play with cats.

Do you have any advice to anyone thinking about taking up derby?
Do it! You may be anxious or terrified you’re going to get hurt or you think you aren’t good enough…. but once you join you will fall in love and never look back.

When did you join Red Stick Roller Derby?
I joined in August 2012.
