June’s Capital Defender of the Month: MillerTime!

Name: MillerTime
Number: 929

What’s the story behind your name and number?
Well, my first team (Mississippi Brawl Stars) already called me Miller and we just added time onto it so they wouldn’t have to learn a new name. It was also a nickname from high-school.  My original number was 5pm but WFTDA doesn’t recognize lower case letters so I changed it due to how common 5 is.

What positions do you play?
I jam more than anything right now. I’m learning how to be a better pivot and I like to block but don’t get to do it as much anymore. When I first joined all I did was block.

What is your favorite thing about derby?
I love how aggressive it can be. I enjoy the challenge of weaving in and out of people.

What first attracted you to the sport?
I knew how challenging roller derby was before I joined, which I loved. I happened to be selling merchandise at an ice hockey game and saw some girls wearing roller derby team shirts. I asked what I needed to do to join and they said show up.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned from playing?
Team work is the most important part of roller derby. It doesn’t matter how good of a jammer or a blocker you are. If you aren’t working together as a team, you won’t win.

What are your goals as a player?
I want to be good enough that I will get asked to play on the All Star team and that they will be able to guarantee me play time and the chance to jam. I’m not there yet but it is a goal to work towards.

What is your most memorable moment on the track?
My first time jamming is my most memorable moment. When I first started I was so freaked out about jamming because I watched my teammates take a beating. Then I tried it and it was such an adrenaline rush, I became instantly addicted. I’m learning to play all the positions but jamming will always be my favorite.

What type of gear do you prefer?
All my pads are 187s and I happen to love the Vanilla boots on the skates I bought from Val Killmore. I also like poison wheels or heartless wheels.

Do you have a favorite song to skate to or a theme song?
I like anything that pumps me up. One song I particularly like to listen to on the way to practice is “Kyoto” by Skrillex or “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark” by Fall Out Boy.

What is your favorite sign or cheer you’ve seen or heard from the crowd?
I love hearing the ones that Fun Size’s fans come up with. They are some of the most creative I’ve heard.

MillerTime sprints around the track during the Heroes on the Flat Track bout.

If you could arm wrestle any person in the league, who would you arm wrestle and why?
I’d arm wrestle Toni Smasheries because she’s easy to distract. I’d make her laugh and then win.

Is there a teammate with whom you work the best?
I try to work well with everyone, but I work especially well with Photobomber and Toni Smasheries. Toni clears holes for me. Bomber pivots for me so much that I don’t have to tell her what I need; she just knows and she makes it happen.

What sports did you play before you laced up the quads and took to the flat track?
Volleyball, softball, and I did triathlons for a while as well.

What do you do when you’re not skating?
I work as a chemical engineer. That job is what pays for the gear.

Do you have any advice to anyone thinking about taking up derby?
Do it. You won’t find another sport where people are more accepting and awesome. Some of the best people I’ve ever met, I’ve met through roller derby. We have tryouts and you need to come!

When did you join Red Stick Roller Derby?
