Name: G String

Number: 440

What are the reasons behind derby name and number?
I am most passionate about music, especially playing guitar. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 12 years old. I occasionally write a song. The name was suggested by some teammates and I went with it cause I loved the double meaning…

The number is the Hertz frequency at which you tune a guitar to ‘standard tuning.’

Which position do you play?
Jammer and blocker

I love the challenge, the competition, and the camaraderie of being part of this team.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned playing derby?
TO NOT GIVE UP! No matter how bad my legs hurt, and how those last few laps around the track might make me want to scream, cry, and never come back, I still keep skating.

What is your most memorable derby moment?
The very first bout I played in, we won. Some of my teammates were a part of my fresh meat class. It was a sweet moment to have worked so hard and finish with a win.

What do you do when you’re not playing derby?
During the day, I am a medical technologist, specializing in Microbiology. I work in the lab at Baton Rouge General. Essentially, I “play” with bacteria. I determine the pathogens present in cultures and provide a susceptibility pattern for physicians so they can accurately treat their patients.

I also play guitar, and sometimes I give lessons.

Do you have a favorite skating song or a theme song?
I like to listen to the entire Wild Flag album while skating. I usually mix that up with some Led Zeppelin, 2Pac, Black Keys….this list could go on forever.

Do you have any advice to anyone thinking about playing derby?
Seriously, just do it. You’ll be surprised what you are capable of accomplishing.

Did you play any sports before roller derby?
I played lots of different sports in high school. These days, I stick with tennis, soccer, and generally playing around outside in parks.
